Position Summary: Lead clinical strategy and help shape products that support better care for providers and patients. The Associate Chief Medical Officer partners with the Chief Medical Officer and cross-functional teams across product, clinical, commercial, marketing, and customer-facing areas to translate clinical insight into practical decisions. This role is based remotely or hybrid, depending on business needs, with travel expected as part of the role. This role reports to the Chief Medical Officer. About the Team: The clinical leadership team works to ensure athenahealth’s products, services, and customer experience reflect sound clinical judgment and real-world workflow needs. The team partners closely with product, engineering, customer success, sales, legal, UX, and specialty business leaders to support product development, customer engagement, and clinical positioning. They use clinical expertise, customer feedback, and market insight to inform roadmap decisions and strategic priorities. The team also supports internal education, advisory forums, and external conversations with customers and industry stakeholders. Essential Job Responsibilities: Facilitate clinical workflow discussions and education across teams to ensure product decisions reflect real-world practice needs. Translate customer and market needs into clear recommendations for product and engineering teams to support prioritization and roadmap planning. Lead clinical informatics efforts and provide clinical guidance on strategic initiatives, data analysis, and product direction. Serve as a senior clinical partner to Clinical Content, Clinical Terminology, Clinical Informatics, Patient Safety, and Specialty Business Segment teams. Build and support the development of clinical leaders across the organization. Provide clinical input into competitive positioning and identify factors that may influence customer retention and growth. Partner with Customer Success, Product Optimization, and other teams to support high-priority customer issues and resolution efforts. Represent athenahealth in select external forums, industry events, and customer-facing engagements as a clinical leader. Apply AI tools and AI-enabled workflows to support faster review of clinical information, stronger synthesis of customer and product input, and more efficient preparation for meetings, while using judgment to validate outputs before they inform decisions. Travel required 25–40% annually. Additional Job Responsibilities: Co-lead the Clinical Advisory Board and engage key clinical stakeholders across the customer base. Co-lead the Council of Medical Executives and support relationship-building with customer clinical leaders. Participate in select sales demonstrations and prospect conversations to provide clinical perspective. Contribute to thought leadership through webinars, blogs, bylines, podcasts, email campaigns, and other forums. Stay current on healthcare policy, EHR regulation, value-based care, and clinical informatics trends. Support internal and external communications requiring clinical subject matter expertise. Partner with legal, public relations, user experience, and other business units on clinical matters. Expected Education & Experience: Medical degree (MD or DO) and board certification required. Preferred clinical background in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, or OB/Gyn. Minimum 10 years of clinical experience as a practicing physician, with progression into healthcare leadership roles. Clinical informatics experience required; board certification in Clinical Informatics preferred. Patient safety experience required; CPPS certification preferred. Deep experience with EHR use, configuration, and optimization in clinical practice required; athenahealth platform experience strongly preferred. Experience working across multiple specialties preferred. Experience in customer-facing, commercial, or advisory board settings preferred. Demonstrated ability to work across a matrixed organization and influence through credibility, collaboration, and sound reasoning. Active, unrestricted medical license preferred; ability to provide clinical patient care on the athenahealth platform up to 1 day per week strongly preferred. Expected Compensation $207,000 - $351,000 The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.
