Position Summary... What you'll do... Manager, Automation Engineering – Parcel Strategy & Design About the Role We’re looking for a technically strong and curious Manager, Automation Engineering – Parcel Strategy & Design to support the development of Walmart’s parcel automation strategy and future network capabilities. This role will focus on developing automation strategies, concepts, engineering standards, and scalable material-handling solutions across Sortable Fulfillment Centers, Non-Sort Fulfillment Centers, Parcel Hubs, and other nodes within Walmart’s end-to-end parcel network. The individual will help translate long-term network and operational strategies into practical automation designs that improve throughput, cost, reliability, associate experience, and scalability. This role will support both near-term programs and future-state concepts, helping define how automation should evolve as Walmart’s parcel network continues to scale. Key areas of focus include developing parcel and mailer handling concepts, evaluating emerging automation technologies, benchmarking solutions across the eCommerce, logistics, fulfillment, and warehouse automation industries, and partnering with suppliers to understand new capabilities and future technology roadmaps. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering fundamentals with curiosity about emerging technology and the ability to translate complex operational requirements into practical, scalable automation solutions. This person should be comfortable working across data analysis, conceptual design, vendor discussions, engineering drawings, operational requirements, and cross-functional collaboration. This is an opportunity to help shape the future automation architecture of Walmart’s parcel network as it continues to scale and evolve. What You’ll Do Develop parcel automation strategies, concepts, and designs across Sortable Fulfillment Centers, Non-Sort Fulfillment Centers, Parcel Hubs, and other future parcel-network nodes, translating network and operational requirements into material flows, equipment concepts, layouts, capacity requirements, and system-level design requirements. Support development of the long-term parcel automation roadmap by evaluating emerging technologies, identifying capability gaps, and benchmarking solutions across the eCommerce, logistics, fulfillment, and automation industries. Develop conceptual layouts, process flows, capacity models, and engineering analyses to compare alternative solutions based on throughput, space, cost, maintainability, scalability, operational complexity, and implementation feasibility. Partner with automation suppliers and technology providers to evaluate equipment capabilities, technical limitations, development roadmaps, and opportunities for new or customized solutions. Develop and improve engineering standards, design requirements, and reusable solution concepts, incorporating lessons learned from deployed systems into future designs and technical requirements. Apply data analysis and engineering economics to support business cases, technology selection, cost-to-serve improvements, and fact-based engineering recommendations. Partner across Network Strategy, Operations, Product, Automation Engineering, Design, Deployment, Construction, Global Tech, Procurement, Reliability, and suppliers to develop integrated solutions and resolve complex engineering challenges. Support pilots and proof-of-concept activities for new automation technologies and communicate technical recommendations through engineering documentation, analysis, presentations, and executive-ready materials. What You’ll Bring Experience in automation engineering, material-handling system design, industrial engineering, systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply-chain engineering, or a related technical field. Experience developing or evaluating automation solutions within distribution, fulfillment, logistics, manufacturing, or other complex industrial environments. Working knowledge of material-handling equipment and automation technologies, such as conveyors, sortation systems, scanning systems, singulation, robotics, automated transport, or other warehouse automation technologies. Ability to develop and evaluate material-flow concepts, engineering layouts, process flows, equipment requirements, system-level designs, and technical documentation. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate throughput, capacity, cost, space, operational impact, and engineering tradeoffs and translate ambiguous problems into structured engineering solutions. Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering teams, operations, technology teams, suppliers, and cross-functional stakeholders. Curiosity about emerging automation technologies and an interest in understanding how technologies used across other industries can be applied at Walmart scale.
