What You'll Do: The Public Health Laboratory is seeking a Microbiology Supervisor 1 to manage the development and implementation of whole genome sequencing for the Lab. This position requires thorough knowledge of microbiology, microbiological laboratory techniques and testing procedures, and supervisory principles/techniques in order to provide daily supervision of laboratory scientists assigned to the section. The Microbiology Supervisor 1 will be responsible for overseeing the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical activities of the sequencing section. The laboratory sequences the following public health priorities: SARS-CoV-2 Bacterial foodborne illness (i.e., Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes) Antimicrobial-resistant hospital-acquired pathogens (i.e., Klebsiella, Acinetobacter) Influenza Cryptosporidium Measles Streptococcal pathogens Mycobacterium tuberculosis Newborn Screening Additional Duties include: Attend scheduled section meetings Keep abreast of recent developments in the field Maintain continuous professional contact with physicians, laboratories, hospitals, clinics, and local health departments (LHDs) concerning tests performed and their results As assigned, work in other areas of Microbiology as work priorities and outbreak situations develop Assist with outreach to outside laboratories, academic institutions, and other partners to develop relationships and networks to support personnel development Leads development of section's specific response to federal grant opportunities, facilitating, monitoring, and reporting on progress of grant workplans Unusual Working Conditions: Candidates must be vaccinated for Hepatitis-B and will be exposed to biofluids and tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, and/or explosives; may work varying hours and must be able to provide own transportation.
