Senior Staff Applications Development Engineer at ServiceNow

It all started when engineer Fred Luddy wrote code that automated a tedious task for his coworker, Phyllis. She cried tears of joy. That moment inspired Fred to build a company that could do that for everyone—freeing people from busywork so they could focus on meaningful work. Today, ServiceNow is the AI control tower for business reinvention. Our ServiceNow AI platform brings together any AI, any data, and any workflow— helping 85% of the Fortune 500® work smarter, faster, and better. We're building an AI-native culture where technology and talent are unstoppable together. And we're just getting started. Join us to put AI to work for people.   We are the AI Experience Framework (AIUX) team that builds the platform that powers ServiceNow's AI-first user interfaces. Using modern Lit-based web components, AIUX builds modular, reusable conversational experiences that serve as the technical foundation for conversation-first applications like Employee Slate. This role owns full-stack architectural decisions in a modern JavaScript/component-driven environment, working across AI integration, performance scale, and multi-team coordination — spanning our SSR runtime (server-rendered Lit components, versioned request routing, isolated execution pools) and the ServiceNow Glide platform layer it integrates with.  What you get to do in this role:      Own code from design, implementation, test automation, and delivery of high-quality product to our users  Work with product owners to understand detailed requirements and drive the full development lifecycle  Build software that is simple to use, allowing customers to extend and customize functionality to meet their specific needs  Contribute to the design and implementation of new products and features while enhancing the existing product suite  Mentor colleagues and promote knowledge-sharing across teams  Apply advanced knowledge of data structures, algorithms, OO design, design patterns, and performance/scale considerations  Raise the engineering bar through architecture reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and technical direction  Architect modular, reusable component systems for scalability and extensibility  Own architecture across the request path — proxy, version-aware routing, server-rendered component runtime, and the ServiceNow platform services it calls into  Set technical direction for framework-level APIs (context propagation, layout composition, state management) consumed by every downstream component team  Represent AIUX Framework in cross-org architecture decisions and act as an escalation point for the hardest production issues   To be successful in this role you have: Experience in leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving. This may include using AI-powered tools, automating workflows, analyzing AI-driven insights, or exploring AI's potential impact on the function or industry. 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise in JavaScript and substantial experience in Java or a similar OO language (C++, C#, Go acceptable)  Passion for JavaScript and the Web as a platform, reusability, and componentization  Advanced experience with modern UI frameworks: Angular, React, Vue, or Lit  Advanced knowledge of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, design patterns, and performance/scale considerations  Advanced knowledge and experience with relational databases: development, troubleshooting, and performance optimization  Deep expertise in server-side rendering and hydration, including the failure modes specific to isomorphic rendering (markup mismatches, browser-API leakage into server code)  Strong systems-level Node.js experience: process/worker isolation (V8 isolates or equivalent sandboxing), HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 semantics, reverse proxying, and designing for concurrent versioned rollouts  Comfortable working across a JVM/Maven backend (Java, ServiceNow Glide platform conventions) in addition to a Node/TypeScript SSR stack  Demonstrated experience as a technical lead, Staff Engineer, or equivalent senior individual contributor responsible for architecture, technical direction, code quality, and mentoring  Track record designing framework-level abstractions (component base classes, context/DI systems, event contracts) consumed by many other engineering teams  Ability to make pragmatic architecture decisions across performance, reliability, security, maintainability, and delivery speed  Demonstrated capability to manage multiple projects with material technical risk across teams and processes  Track record serving as functional lead or technical owner  Exposure to multiple technology stacks: Cloud Dev, Platforms, Web Dev, Frameworks, service-oriented architecture  Experience designing and architecting modular, reusable component systems  Preferred — AIUX Framework specific  Experience with build systems that emit multiple targets from one component source (server bundles vs. code-split browser bundles)  Hands-on experience operating services in Kubernetes: deployment configuration, scaling, rollout/rollback, and incident response  Experience building and maintaining observability tooling (Grafana dashboards, Prometheus alerting) for production systems    FD21 For positions in this location, we offer a base pay of $190,900 - $334,100 , plus equity (when applicable), variable/incentive compensation and benefits.
