Job Title: Student Glass Shop Assistant Department: Arts and Sciences | Chemistry and Biochemistry Administration-JM Position Summary The Student Glass Shop Assistant provides operational, technical, and administrative support within the Scientific Glassblowing Shop of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, serving research and teaching laboratories. This position assists with scientific glass fabrication, repair, and modification projects under the supervision of an experienced scientific glassblower. The employee will progressively develop skills in scientific glass working techniques while supporting the production of custom apparatus used in research, teaching, and clinical laboratories. Serves as a primary point of contact for researchers, faculty, staff, and students utilizing the Scientific Glassblowing Shop. Assists customers throughout the project lifecycle, from initial consultation through project completion and delivery. Maintains a clean, safe, and efficient work environment that supports high-quality fabrication and research support activities. Provides support for the business and operational functions of the Scientific Glass Shop. 40% Scientific Glass Fabrication and Technical Training Assists with scientific glass fabrication, repair, and modification projects under the supervision of an experienced scientific glassblower. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn technical fabrication processes. Ability to work safely in a laboratory and workshop environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform routine physical tasks. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Preferred Qualifications Current student or graduate of Salem Community College's Scientific Glass Technology program. Coursework or experience in scientific glass technology, laboratory sciences, manufacturing, machining, welding, fabrication, or related technical disciplines. Experience working in a laboratory, research support environment, fabrication shop, or manufacturing setting. Familiarity with hand tools, shop equipment, or scientific instrumentation.
